You rolled up your sleeves and made the best of a very rocky and uncertain time to get distance learning results. If you\u2019re like me, you managed a full-time job and helped school your kids at the same time, all at home!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did it go? Well, you may agree with the assessments of more than\u00a03,000 parents of a child with special needs who were surveyed in April 2020. After COVID-19 closed schools in the United States,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/\">Wrights Law<\/a>, in collaboration with Diane Willcutts, LLC, surveyed distance learning results for children with disabilities. The survey included parent respondents from 49 states and the District of Columbia. Here are some findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Most children received special education services.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Sixty-nine percent said their districts were providing special education, however many parents also reported their child received minimal services or an amount far less than the child\u2019s IEP called for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At-home special education looked different during Covid-19 learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>38% had paper packets sent home,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>58% participated in independent learning on the computer,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>67% had check-ins with a teacher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>44% of families reported that their children were receiving synchronous online therapies, such as speech\/language, occupational therapy, and counseling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Only eight percent of families believed their children made progress during distance learning, while 49% reported regression.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Many parents noted concerns about distance learning.<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Minimal to no direct communication with their children\u2019s teachers.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not having\u00a0enough time to support their children\u2019s distance learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not qualified or prepared to take on the teacher\u2019s\u00a0role.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dissatisfaction with pre-recorded lessons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need\u00a0school-provided technology\u00a0and\/or inadequate internet connectivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>work was not sufficiently modified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need for social opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Materials were not well-organized.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Felt their child was getting \u201cbusy wor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Parents offered suggestions to improve distance learning results:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More teacher-led, synchronous instruction, and therapies through platforms like Zoom and Google Meet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More interactive (synchronous) learning with\u00a01:1 time with the teacher and related services providers, and classes in small groups or traditional-sized classes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An increased amount of service time, comparable to the time in the IEP.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better communication with their child\u2019s teachers and staff.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supervised live video chats to provide students with social opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training for parents\u00a0and their children\u2019s teachers\u00a0on the technology\/platforms being used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training for teachers\u00a0in strategies for effective distance learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parent coaching so they can better support their children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How will you approach distance learning if it goes into effect this year?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Several families of children with severe disabilities stated that their children could benefit only from in-person programming, and in-person therapies, and instruction, either one-on-one in-home, at school, or in small, social-distanced, small groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full summary is located&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/virus.parent.survey.htm?fbclid=IwAR3QDT-xpDKe8DW76FQ9lI5v9WPR2pd2qMfzkBz6RlbcCHdMwT2qx5-6Fbo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Distance learning results for special education students from 2020<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":832,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":false,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[4],"tags":[118],"class_list":{"0":"post-831","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"hentry","7":"category-down-syndrome","8":"tag-education","10":"fallback-thumbnail"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.4 -
